The SoundPoint IP 450 - Filling in the gap
Saturday, October 25, 2008
Enter the Polycom SoundPoint IP 450. This new model takes in to consideration that the new push for Polycom is in the HD realm and that the Black and Silver plastics are defiantly catching the eye of today's Asterisk System installer and consumer. Having said that, within the new line of Polycom Phones there has been a gap that had been pretty wide for some time now. Looking at the current models you'll notice that the "cube user" models have been the IP 320/330 and the IP 430. All great phones in their own right, however, something is missing from each... A good example of this would be the lack of a back lit display. This feature has been a deal killer for some since day one and has created a jump to the next phone mentality forcing people to .
Where does it fit:
The Polycom IP 450, IMHO will do a few things for our customers. it will give them the ability to save a few bucks where needed by offering a phone that cost less than the 550 while giving them features from the legacy IP 501 (3 Lines), the Polcyom IP 430 (messages key) and the black and silver look of the new IP 320/330.

Firmware Version 6.1.3a For Linksys SPA942 and SPA962 delivers BLF and LDAP
Thursday, October 23, 2008
I am not quite sure how this slipped past me... The most recent version of Linksys firmware for their popular SPA9xx Line up now supports Busy Lamp Field setup on the phones base unit. This addition in functionality adds SPA932 features to the line appearance keys. This new enhancement takes it step further by allowing a shared appearance that will afford the end user to answer a ringing call at a remote station.
Also Added:
--Secure Real Time Protocol (SRTP) enhancements for secure calling
--The security methods for VoIP calls were enhanced to incorporate a standard
base SRTP Key Negotiation called Security Description (RFC 4568).
--Contact header in 18X messages for Application Server features
--The Contact Header is now included in all 18X messages. This enhancement
improves the interoperability of the phones with Application Server features
that use the contact header to identify the endpoint interaction.
--Busy display information for 486 Busy Here message
This feature enables the phone to display the word “Busy” when receiving a
486 Busy Here message as response to an INVITE.
--VLAN and priority tagging on phone data port (802.1p/q)
This feature facilities tagging of the VLAN ID (802.1Q) and priority bits (802.1p)
of the traffic coming from the PC port of the SPA9x2 phone. Three new
parameters are included with the feature:

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AstriCon 2008)—September 24, 2008— Digium®, creator and primary developer of Asterisk®, the leading open source telephony platform, is proud to announce the winners of the 2008 Digium Innovation Awards. The company announced the winners today at AstriCon, the industry conference and exhibition dedicated to Asterisk. The Innovation Awards recognize innovation, enterprise-class solutions, measurable return on investment, and use of Asterisk in businesses outside of the communications industry.
Asterisk, more than any other open source project, inspires the entrepreneurial spirit. These innovators have used the power of Asterisk to create many new products, services and solutions which have improved business processes and conquered technology challenges. Digium presents the Innovation Awards to recognize and showcase the innovation, creativity and commercial success of the many Asterisk-based products and services.

"Many of the nominees for the Innovation Awards blew us away with their ability to solve real business problems and to create entirely new voice solutions using Asterisk. We're pleased to recognize the winners and to congratulate each and every entrant."
The 2008 winners of the Digium Innovation Awards are:
Pioneer Award :: GreenfieldTech (Udim, Israel) - Working on behalf of a customer, GreenfieldTech created a solution that allows people from all over the world to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. The solution uses a pre-paid platform, ultra-sonic speakers and Asterisk as the main telephony and transmission layer for the platform. Approved by Israeli rabbis as an alternative to visiting the Western Wall for prayer, the service is marketed in the U.S. as Shema-Israel.
Big Biz Asterisk Award :: Integrics Ltd. (Londonderry, U.K.) - Integrics uses Asterisk in combination with a range of other open source technologies to create Enswitch for telecommunications companies, multi-tenant hosted PBX providers, Internet telephony service providers (ITSPs) and Voice over IP (VoIP) providers. Enswitch forms the basis for highly scalable, redundant, cluster-aware commercial telephony services. The project scope consists of over 40 customers worldwide with nearly 500,000 end points.
ROI Award :: Emdeon Business Services (Nashville, Tenn.) - Emdeon is the industry leader in healthcare EDI services. The company connects healthcare providers to payers across the United States. Working for the State of Maryland, Emdeon created an Asterisk-based telephone inquiry system that allows healthcare providers to quickly and efficiently verify a Medicaid recipient's current eligibility status. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and used about 22,000 times a day by 60,000 physicians and hospitals. In addition to Asterisk and Digium hardware, Emdeon used Dell servers and storage, the Red Hat Linux operating system, MySQL database, Verizon T1s and Cepstral speech technology. The solution met every Maryland requirement in a cost-effective manner.
Inside Out Award :: PhonePlay (Brooklyn, N.Y.) - PhonePlay designs, develops and deploys big-screen games that crowds of people can play simultaneously using mobile phones as controllers. The company uses Asterisk as the bridge between each player's phone and the game software. Players call into a phone number that terminates into Asterisk, which then communicates keypresses to the Java-based PhonePlay server and game software. Big-screen games are used by advertisers and at conferences.
Honorable Mention :: NTT Software Corp. (Tokyo, Japan) - NTT Software is the first company in Japan which provide Asterisk in a major telecommunications company. The company is conducting a trial of Asterisk used in a gateway and terminal for VoIP with the goal of expanding the range of calling options to which NTT Software is able to provide business customers.
While only five awards are given each year, Digium would like to thank all the applicants. The creative and innovative Asterisk-based solutions were enjoyable to review. If you are an Asterisk innovator, you are invited to participate in the 2009 competition by submitting your application to www.digium.com/en/company/awards/innovation.php.
