The IEEE approves 802.11r - Voice over WiFi

Saturday, August 30, 2008

The IEEE has finished 802.11r, a standard that affords WiFi devices to more easily roam between access points. This new standard will undoubtedly improve performance of VoIP phones on enterprise LANs.

The IEEE 802.11 standards began with individual access points in mind, but in larger offices multiple access points are needed. Now, VoIP enabled WiFi device will be able to move from one AP to another quickly. The new standard has improved the time it takes a device to re- assocoate to an AP by leaps and bounds- This improvement will certainly improve real time services like VoIP. Standard 802.11x takes several seconds to re-authenticate where the new 802.11r will re-establish its connection in about 100ms.

The new standard, 802.11r, or Fast Basic Service Set Transition, affords the network to with the ability to establish a security and QoS measure for the device at the new access point, before it roams between the two, so the transition can take place in less than 50ms - the standard required for voice roaming.

The IEEE standard 802.11r has been in the works for about four years, and the concept has, but the standard has finally approved.

until now, implementers have been forced to use lower security options on WiFi VoIP (WEP for Example) while putting VoIP on separate VLANs.

Restrictions on Internet telephony removed by TRAI’s recommendations

New Delhi, 18th August, 2008 - Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today issued recommendations on “Issues Related to Internet Telephony”.

The rapid technological developments and better quality of voice communications are shaping the future of telecom. The enormous increase in data traffic in international scenario, increasing acceptability of IP networks, adoptability of NGN by many countries, and global liberal regulatory regime for Internet telephony require a fresh review of existing licensing conditions in India.

The present licensing framework has envisaged different type of access service providers (UASL, BSOs, CMSPs), National Long Distance service providers (NLDs) International Long Distance service providers (ILDs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). While access service providers are permitted to provide various services and applications to their subscribers under Universal Access Services License (UASL), the role of other licensees like NLD and ILD is limited to provide long distance services and Internet service providers are permitted to provide access to Internet. It was expected that access service providers will provide highly popular services like Internet Telephony and boost broadband penetration but it has not come on the ground. As such our subscribers are denied advanced value added services in contrast to global scenario where such Internet based services are popular. ISPs are not permitted to provide unrestricted Internet Telephony though they have IP based Infrastructure. Such regulatory restrictions discourage technological advancements and result is grey market activities to provide these services to common masses.

The present regulatory framework denies fruits of technological advancements to reach to common masses. Level playing field issues were being advocated against permitting these services under various licenses. Globally telecommunications are being shaped by steep growth of broadband and wireless subscribers. The regulatory environment should be dynamic, enabling, efficient and encourage competition. Hence regulatory framework for Internet telephony has to be considered in view of convergence and other similar developments taking place across the globe.

The Authority suo-motu had initiated a consultation process on 12th May, 2008 titled “Issues Related to Internet Telephony”. The Authority has considered regulatory framework which is technologically neutral, enables developments, innovations and growth of the telecom sector for benefit of common masses while ensuring that business models of access telecom service providers are not adversely impacted. The end-users in country must be delivered the innovative and cost effective services. Due importance have been given to level playing filed among various service providers, Interconnection mechanism, Interconnect usage charges (IUC), Numbering, Lawful interception, Emergency number dialing, Interoperability, Quality of Service etc. Overall licensing framework has been protected while permitting unrestricted Internet telephony to ISPs.

The salient features of the recommendations are given below:

ISPs have been permitted to provide unrestricted Internet telephony (Termination of Internet telephony calls on PSTN/PLMN and vice-versa).
National Long Distance (NLD) operators shall be permitted to connect to ISPs through public Internet (Internet cloud) for unrestricted Internet telephony.
ISPs and NLD shall have mutual agreement for unrestricted Internet telephony.
NLD shall make suitable commercial and technical arrangements with access providers (PSTN/PLMN) for unrestricted Internet telephony.
No change in existing IUC regime.
TEC shall identify distinct number resources for Internet Telephony subscribers.
Telephone numbers from identified blocks shall be allocated to ISPs, UASPs, BSOs & CMSPs for Internet telephony.
Emergency number dialing is not mandated to ISPs.
All ISPs interested to provide unrestricted Internet telephony shall install Lawful Interception equipment.
Quality of service (QoS) for unrestricted telephony has not been mandated.

These recommendations are a step forward towards developing supportive regulatory environment, encouraging technological advancements, enabling convergence, making unrestricted Internet telephony available and boosting of broadband penetration. These enabling recommendations will put Indian telecom sector in tune with global trends. The grey market tendencies shall be curtailed. It is envisaged that the customers will ultimately benefit from cost effective and innovative Internet Telephony service. The business model of ISPs will improve without impacting access providers due to increase in the telephony call volumes.

Detailed recommendations are available on TRAI’s website www.trai.gov.in.

Thursday, August 28, 2008

VoIP conferencing has been a long time sore spot for wallets everywhere - The combination of hi-tech and hi quality has always come with a high price tag. While some will argue that you get what you pay for, a statement which as a Polycom IP 7000 owner I'll agree with fully, one can expect quality performance from devices in the sub $200 market.

Enter the IPEVO X1-N6 VoIP Conference Station, a device that offers the functionality of a USB connected device with features that are supported under our beloved Asterisk.

Selecting our new VoIP provider Teliax

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

When we started testing with Teliax I was having issues with the service- Having not contacted support (A common problem amongst know it alls like myself) I figured they were probably out of the running-

Deciding to give it one more shot, I posted a message to their forum which was answered within an hour by David Aldworth. Apparently from what I can gather David is one of, or THE owner of the company. After a few email volleys and a phone call (on Sunday even) David had me convinced that the issue was on my end. And he was right.

To make a long story short- Teliax has been working great for us. Our numbers were ported in less than 10 days , their pricing is more than competitive and the service/support we received has been world class.

Check them out online @ http://www.teliax.com

Creating High Quality Music on Hold files from youtube videos (MP3)

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

As you may know, it is illegal to play some content over your on hold system. This post will help guide you through the what's legal, what is not and why.

The following is a brief primer on the various legal issues surrounding the use music on hold in a commercial environment. At the end of this briefing we will cover setting up Music on hold for your Switchvox PBX and also how to convert youtube instrumental videos to MP3 so that you can upload them to your system.

Non-Royalty Paid Music:

This includes music that is piped in over a radio or obtained from CD or online medium like itunes. generally this music is intended for private use and is NOT licensed for use in a commercial environment. by rebroadcasting this music over your asterisk system you may find yourself in violation of the artists copyright. Should you decide to do this the following may apply.

Music that you receive over the radio, or contained on a consumer medium (such as store-bought CD or cassette) is generally intended for private use only, and is NOT licensed for commercial use, rebroadcasting, or public performance.Should you wish to play a radio or some other form of non-licensed music over an on-hold system, the following applies:

Disclaimer- I am no attorney, this has been regurgitated for your perusal from many websites.

The Law By statutory definition, since a corporation or other company is a place 'where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered,' (17 U.S.C. SECTION 101) it is a public place for copyright purposes. Whether the performance is by the playing of a CD or tape, by a radio tuned to a particular station, or via music-on-hold (which constitutes a public performance by virtue of its being a transmission to the public), permission (called a 'license') must first be obtained in order for the use of that music to be lawful, and a fee (called a 'royalty') must be paid for such use.

The Penalties Under this law (U.S.C. TITLE 17), allows copyright owners to receive as damages, quite steep in fact for infringement between $500 and $100,000 - Depending on the severity of the violation.

Creating MP3 files for Switchvox from youtube.com:

In most environments you will generally hear instrumental music on hold. Often this is the case amongst Asterisk users. Having said that, Switchvox offers a way to import a codec that allows admins to use MP3 files for their on hold files.

The following .e4 knowledge base article will cover the setup of this feature and the conversion of youtube videos to mp3 format for use on Switchvox Free Edition, SMB, and SOHO

Digium’s biggest achievement of 08

In 2008 we watched a small but growing/news worthy company get gobbled up by the corporate Sponsor of Asterisk, Digium. In the wake of these happenings we have seen growth in the Swithvox sector of our business as the coupling has given better name recongintion to the solution making it THE Asterisk based solution not just another Asterisk based solution.

Although it has never been a hard sell we are pleased to see that it is gaining speed elsewhere and happy to be a part of it.

FreePBX Release Candidate & Easy Upgrade Options! - Spreading the word

Thursday, August 14, 2008

With recent FreePBX news on the whole Trixbox Forking debacle - I fell it would be a nice add to help spread the word on new FreePBX features and Updates.
From the FreePBX Site:
Posted August 14th, 2008 by p_lindheimer (Developer)

It’s no secret to many of you that we have added an easy upgrade option for you to opt into the current beta program that has just gone to release candidate stage. If you have not seen it, Module Admin now has a 2.4 to 2.5 Upgrade Tool that works just like the one we provide on 2.3 and has been tested thousands of times with no incident!

We have already seen hundreds of users upgrade to the beta with this module and no issues have been reported so you should feel comfortable using it. With the bug count hovering near 0 and holding, we are excited to move the program to a release candidate for FreePBX 2.5.0!
When we released version 2.4 in December/January we were very excited about the new features and integrity checking ability that it provided. We did not think we could out-do ourselves this time around. BOY WERE WE WRONG! So, if you have been reluctant to try out version 2.5 because it has been labeled “beta” or because there was no GUI enabled upgrade path, take another look!
FreePBX is an Asterisk management GUI used by thousands and IMPO the only thing good about previous Trixbox versions. who knows- Maybe Digium will collaborate on a FreePBX/Asterisk distro-
