Digium Launches Hosted Switchvox - Competitors crap their pants again!

Thursday, October 18, 2007

Unless you've been living under a rock you've probably heard that Digium has recenlty acquired fourloop technologies for an undisclosed amount. After several conversation with the folks at Switchvox I can only speculate that the amount was "more than enough" because the already cheerful management seems to be on cloud 9!

Now for the news of the day...

Digium, the corporate sponsor of Asterisk and in my professional opinion, the second coolest company on the planet (Next to .e4 of course) announced the launch of their new hosted SwitchVox application today.

As per the press release, the Switchvox Hosted Edition will enable Internet Service Providers (ISPs), VARs and other VoIP related service providers to offer customers with Switchvox’s fully-featured IP PBX phone system, running in a virtual environment. These providers can offer small companies subscriptions to the sophisticated phone system, which includes of all the benefits offered by Switchvox’s on-premise solutions, such as the Switchboard, Switchvox’s real-time call control panel; voicemail; call forwarding and voice prompts.

“Smaller offices need a reliable and stable phone system, but often cannot afford an on-site solution and are not interested in paying per line when they have intentions of expanding,” said Joshua Stephens, Switchvox CEO. “With Switchvox Hosted Edition, they now have access to a fully-featured IP PBX, and ISPs can feel confident approaching this niche market with a product line that can transition with their customers as they grow, instead of being locked in to expensive softswitches to provide hosted PBX solutions.”

After hearing of this news I have now speculated that this will be the first of many "advantage Switchvox" moves.

Entering the hosted space will surely cut in to sales at rival Fonality, leave them holding the bag and thinking what's next? My guess will be a quick change in strategy and possibly a few new products to compete with the Open Source wunderkind Mark Spencer.

Wow. Prediction: Switchvox becomes marginally successful in selling the hosted service. Scene Two: Their unproven virtualized server solution crashes, shutting down ALL of the customers hosted on the affected boxes. Scene Three: Digium craps their pants having burned both their channel and hundreds (if not thousands of customers). Digium and Switchvox have "beating up" the Hosted-PBX market with FUD for the last 3 years and now they becoming a purveyor of the sae technolgy they have been disparaging? What has so dramatically changed in the IP climate to warrant this 180?
